Summer In Sag Harbour

Here's a nice post about Spending he summer in Sag Harbour. The Blogger does a great job of describing what makes Long Island so Great. Here's a sample:
We hit the full spectrum. From investigating the pricey boutiques of towns like Southampton and East Hampton, to sneaking on to the private beaches of Bridgehampton. Firing up the grill and savouring the catch of the day accompanied by Long Island corn and fresh vegetables, to getting special treatment at the wineries and restaurants where another friend knows all. Plus not missing out on all the local goodies — local delis like Loaves and Fishes (5 hits), roadside produce stands, and institutions like The Lobster Roll in Amagansett (better known simply as "Lunch", which has a book (One hit) written about it) and the Clam Bar (4 hits) on Montauk Highway.

For a few years now, I've been reading the "Celebrations" section in Sunday . Each week they feature eight or nine couples who've just gotten married. For each couple there's a picture and a brief bio which lists each partners occupation.

…Now Maybe I have too much time on my hands, but one thing I've noticed is that every week there seems to be a disproportionate number of in this group. This week (10/15) (Page G58) there eight couples listed —five of these couples have teacher as the occupation of one of the partners. I see numbers like this every week, usually at least a few of the couples getting married are teachers. Is this some great conspiracy… Maybe, I'll keep watching.

Karts Indoor Raceway - GoCart Racing in Ronkonkoma

Updated September 26, 2006

Last weekend, my wife and I took our five year old son and one of his friends (also five) to Karts Indoor (1390 hits). This new and very clean indoor (373 hits) racing facility offers two realistic (211 hits), a game room, snack bar and (117 hits). The kids had a great time and it was relatively inexpensive. Here’s a review of this very cool way to spend a Saturday.Racing FunThe Raceway consists of two separate tracks, a full size one for drivers 54’’ tall and a junior track for younger kids (40’’ tall minimum). Being only five, our kids had to stay on the junior track, but they still had a great time. The tracks themselves and the cars are painted to create the feel of being at a real (57 hits) raceway. There are murals on the walls depicting (42 hits) and mechanics garages with race cars inside.

Now, unlike the old fashioned (146 hits) I remember, these carts are electric. They’re quiet and don’t let off the toxic fumes that the gas versions do. They offer four point safety belts and remote control shutoff in case of a problem. Even the junior carts were pretty fast. Older kids, can race on the full size track, either alone or in a double cart . These carts are also electric and offer similar safety features.

Micro Racing

This was fun, kind of like (129 hits) – only without any slots. Each racer controls their car from the sidelines, the cars can go anywhere on the track – forward or reverse. This was a lot of fun as the kids didn’t have to worry so much about their speed – like you have to do with slot car racing – they simply had to steer around other cars and stay out of accidents.

The Game Room

Pretty typical game room consisting of about fifteen games; the usual racing games and shoot-em ups. Most of the games take two to four tokens – about average.

Snack Bar

At the Snack Bar, called the “ (53 hits) Cafe”, you’ll find the usual hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza and ice cream. Nothing fancy but no worse then any other snack bar geared for kids.

The Cost

We paid $17 per child which gave us five races. We also took advantage of their lunch special - $6 gets you either a hot dog or a slice of pizza, a fountain drink, ice cream and one Micro Track race. Of course the game room was separate; tokens are the usual quarter each.

Address and Directions

(2161 hits) is kind of out of the way – I think this is what keeps the crowds away. They’re located in one of the industrial parks in (125 hits):

Phone: 1-800-718-KART
Address: 701 Union Pkwy. Ronkonkoma, NY 11779

The Five Spookiest Places on Long Island

Updated September 15, 2006

Long Island has never had a shortage on Urban Legends, with Halloween
just around the corner; I thought it would be fun to have a look at some of these legends and find the spookiest places on Long Island. So here’s our list in order from least to most scary:

5) Lake Ronkonkoma – The legend states that there were once two tribes of Native Americans living across the lake from one another. A princess from one of the tribes and a warrior from the other had fallen in love. They planned to meet in the middle of the lake at midnight and elope. On the night in question the princess rowed to the center of the lake and waited for her lover to arrive. For some reason the warrior never made it to the designated meeting place. It’s said that the girl died waiting for her fiancée. The princess is said to claim the life of one boy every year.

4) Mary Hatchet – In this legend a young girl kills her entire family with a hatchet then takes her own life. The legend states that the family house sunk into the ground leaving only the chimney. There are two locations for this site, either in Cedarhurst or Mount Misery.

3) Mary’s Grave – There are several versions of this story and several supposed locations. Usually, Mary is a young girl who is killed in a brutal fashion, it’s said that if you shine a flashlight on her headstone at night you’ll see her face. Among the alleged locations for Mary’s Grave are Head of the Harbor and Mount Misery

I remember as a teenager, driving around looking for Mary’s Grave in the Miller Place/Setauket area. While, we never found it, it sure made for some interesting evenings.

2) Reid’s Ice Cream – Located in Blue Point, this storage facility (now torn down), is the scene of two different legends. The first involves a dancer or stripper back in the 1950’s who is supposed to have gone into Reid’s to “be with a man” and was killed. Witnesses have reported scary things like the sound of a woman screaming, or a women walking around, some say with no eyes. The other legend involves a young boy who was killed either in the facility or near the area. Witnesses say they’ve heard a child humming and even the patter of small feed.

1) The Amityville Horror House – On a quite side street in Amityville is the site of one of the most infamous haunted houses of all time. The subject of two motion pictures and countless articles and news stories, this is it, our pick for the spookiest place on Long Island.

I don’t know if the house is really haunted, the fact is that a brutal multiple murder took place in the DeFeo family home. The only survivor Ronald DeFeo was later convicted of the murders. The house was then sold to George And Kathy Lutz and their three children. The Lutz’s lived in the house for only 28 days during which they claim all kinds of really bad things happened. Proceed with Caution!

So that’s our list of the five spookiest places on Long Island. Want more in-depth information about any of these sites visit, LIOddities.com.
